For several weeks I carried a ziploc bag in my car and whenever I went to a store (mostly grocery stores) I looked for bits of plastic in the parking lot.
Among the items found were:
Getting started was a bit of a tough part. I cut up a large hanger into pieces and decided to go "catamaran style" with two main booms connected by another piece of hanger. Then got inspired by the trapezoidal colored pieces which seemed to naturally fit on the sides.
One difficulty was to get small detail. I ended up cutting and filing pieces of plastic to create some kind of crude turret pod in the front that could represent sensors or weapons of some sort.
For bonding these difficult plastics I used superglue for smaller bits and some gorilla hot glue for more structural joints. By the end the thing took an interesting shape, though some parts are fairly crooked if you look closely. I even managed to make a little stand with a square piece and a stick.
